Burn Injuries

In a recent sample year, almost 2.5 million people suffered burn injuries in the United States. Burn injuries can bring about extreme physical and emotional trauma, depending upon the severity of the burn.

Burns are classified by their characteristics as either first, second or third degree. First degree burns are considered the mildest and affect only the top layer of skin. Second degree burns affect skin layers beneath the top layer, are more severe, and can result in blisters and severe pain. Third degree burns, the most severe burns, involve all layers of the skin and tissue underlying the skin. Third degree burns can result in nerve damage as well.

People who suffer burn injuries, whether from home or work fires, automobile collisions, work injuries or other unexpected tragedies can suffer permanent effects. Burn injury victims often suffer smoke inhalation in addition to external burns.

Burn injuries can result from defective products, defective wiring or neglect.
